Child Slavery in Nigeria, Our Fellow Human Beings

Part of my job is to read about what is going on in our world, from an economic, social and political perspective, so that it can help shape our view on the investment advice we give to our clients. This morning I was perusing the Wall Street Journal as I do every morning. Of course there are reports on earnings releases, recent economic activity both here in the U.S. and abroad, and on and on, the usual stuff that I pay attention to. However there are at times articles that cause me to catch my breath, that cause my heart to leap out of my chest. Most things I read at work I process in my mind, but these are the things that go straight to my heart. I am reminded of what really matters to me.

What if that was your mom? What if that was your child? We are all humans, created in God's image, with unlimited value. And as a result we all share a responsibility to our fellow human beings. Each one of these faces has a name, a family who loves them, whose lives are different EVERY DAY because they were kidnapped from the safety of their homes and towns.

So what do we do? I immediately think of advice Andy Stanley gives when our hearts are overwhelmed by this world.

"Do for one what you wish you could do for everyone."

Sponsor a child (World Vision, Compassion, there are lots of organizations). Determine how your interests and passions align with the needs in the world, and identify a few organizations to financially support who are helping to address those needs. Share your burden with friends and family to raise awareness. Research a missions or service trip. Adopt a child. Support a family who is adopting. Sign up to tutor at a local school. Find a family in your community who may need help. Serve a neighbor in need. The list goes on. And last but not least, pray and ask God for wisdom on what your role in the world should be as it relates to the needs of our fellow human beings. Yes, I need to start there.
